April Showers

In the interest of sharing something that may be unusual to the majority of you...
did you know, that when it rains... the steady, all-day, soaking kind of rain... that the deer (and elk, too- I just don't have any photos of them) just bed down?  Not under trees... not trying to take shelter. They just bed down for the duration of the shower.
Oh- they will get up and feed a bit, but then, they just bed down again.
They look so cute... just chillin' in the yard.  Perhaps, they are just waiting to see a rainbow!
We DO have intensely beautiful rainbows.

Vida

So, now I have a pet coyote.
Ok... she's not REALLY my pet- but remember that young pup coyote, that came and played in the horse pasture and our back yard last Winter?  I posted about her. I was just enamored with her zest for life. Well, she's back.
She's back because another sign of Spring, around here, is the infiltration of our pastures by Columbian Ground Squirrels.  I call them Prairie dogs, or gophers, but I have been informed, many times, that I'm being inaccurate.  Whatever- they are a HUGE problem.  There are holes EVERYWHERE- and I'm terrified one of my mares is going to break a leg just trotting around their yard. Vida is helping me out.
I'd been noticing her in the pasture for awhile.
She would stalk the goph.... *sighs* Columbian Ground Squirrels just like a cat!
When she pounced, she'd start digging.
I tried explaining to her that the digging part wasn't really helping the mares or me.
She wasn't impressed with my logic.
As time has gone by, she's started coming in closer and closer to the barn to try her luck catching rodents, and sticking around while I feed the horses. She watches me carefully the entire time I'm down there. She's right not to fully trust any human. But for me, she's become another of my special friends.

That time of year again

All three of our kids have wonderful memories of Bruce flying his helicopter surveys. For one thing, with Bruce being in the air at odd times throughout the day, our routine was definitely disrupted. Meals were often easy, quick, "junk" food, and of course, I had to have plenty of chocolate chocolate chip cookies around for the pilot.  Doug Getz would often land the helicopter in our front lawn! Come in, have some coffee and cookies, pick up Bruce, and take off.  Doug was a gruff, colorful man, and the children loved listening to him.
But probably, their favorite thing of all, was hearing the wop, wop, wop of the helicopter. They'd drop whatever they were doing, scream to each other, "IT'S DADDY!" and run outside to wave and wave as Bruce flew overhead.
and there would be Bruce, looking out the window, waving back to them.
Well, the kids are gone.
But I still listen for the sound of the helicopter, and now it's the Shelties and me, who bump and crowd and rush out the door.
We actually get to watch him counting OUR elk.
One of my favorite pastimes now, is watching the mares react.
Though they aren't terrified, they definitely all rush to stand together in the face of this huge bird that buzzes their pasture...
and then, flies away.
I'll rest easier when Bruce no longer flies his surveys. It's a dangerous business, and he's lost one of his very close friends, and several acquaintances to the practice. But I will admit, there will be a tiny part of me that misses the excitement, and novelty of having your husband wave to you from the sky.

New pets

Bruce and I were in Missoula at Murdochs right when the baby chicks came in!  This is an event! People line up outside the doors waiting to come in and buy their chicks. They usually sell out in a matter of hours.  We'd been researching a few different breeds, and were intrigued by Sex Link pullets.  Supposedly, you can tell male versus female when they are chicks- greatly decreasing the odds of getting a rooster.  And another rooster, we do NOT need!  (not that I don't love the two roosters we have... but a third rooster is just asking for trouble!)  AND Sex Links are good laying hens, with a mild disposition. When we saw they had Sex Link chicks, we decided to buy two of them.
And so.....
I now introduce to you...
Livvy (short for Olivia)
and
Ebby (short for Ebony)
They will be kept separate from our big hens and roosters until they're almost fully grown-probably Sept. They won't be producing eggs until this Oct. or Nov.
They sure are sweet.  AND we're supposed to be getting 6 Barred Rock chicks sometime soon. Chelsey says they are the luckiest little chicks in the world!  :)
These babies should start laying eggs just about the time our old hens stop completely. Even now, with 7 hens, we only get an average of 2 eggs a day. They've earned their retirement, but Bruce and I can't imagine buying eggs from the store.  We're hoping this is a good solution.

A few signs of Spring

We ARE seeing a few signs of Spring! And it's a welcome sight, believe me!
For one thing, the elk are back!  There are VERY few calves- which is a disappointment and a concern, but at least, they are back.
Here is one of the lucky calves, who made it. :)  The problem wasn't so much last Winter, but the Winter before.... when the cows were pregnant with these calves. That Winter was SO severe, and lasted so long, that many of the cows aborted, and the ones who DID give birth to calves, had low birth weight babies who just didn't survive.  THIS Winter was much kinder to wildlife, and Bruce expects many healthy calves to be born this June... but there will definitely be a gap resulting from the Winter of 2010/2011.
We're seeing bucks again, too!
Just before hunting season starts in October, all the bucks magically disappear!  I, for one, am glad.
AND my farrier shows up again!
Some things are just timeless. :)

Trespassing

Shhhhhhhhhhh!!!
Don't tell!
The Shelties and I are trespassers!
The weather was SO beautiful! and I was feeling a bit more spry that I have been for quite awhile, so I decided to take Selkie and Piper on a walk. And it was after we'd started out, that I started hankering to see one of my favorite spots in the world.  Unfortunately, I don't own the property of this place, and technically, I don't have permission to walk it.
HOWEVER- in my defense- I had permission to RIDE it... last Fall.  And I probably could get permission to walk it.... at least until the rancher puts his cattle on it....  I just didn't have express permission right at that moment.
But can you see why I love it so???
(click on the photo to open it up. It's such a GORGEOUS view!)

April Fools!

This is what we woke up to on April 1st.
It's Montana's typical April Fools prank.
Piper thinks it's funny.
I think it's getting "old".  Grow up, Montana! Try surprising us with sunshine next year!
