Turkey update

For those of you wondering who won the Tom Turkey display contest.....
Apparently, while the two young Toms were fighting it out, this older, mature Tom sneaked in and won the ladies' hearts! :)
Ah well... so it goes.
There's a LOT to be said for experience!

Snow!

It could have been MUCH worse!
They'd predicted 1-3 inches of snow in the valleys!
As it was, we only got snow in the mountains, and 36 degrees and raining in the valley.
Did I mention that it's JUNE 7th?

Strutting his Stuff!

It was funny, because it was just the other day that I told Bruce, I'd never been able to take a photo of a male turkey strutting for the females. It was one of those things on my bucket list that I just hadn't had the chance to fulfill.  Usually, I see the cliche Thanksgiving turkeys on my drive into work... and there is either a car behind me, OR I'm late OR my camera is buried under a pile of preschool papers.  But today, while I was settled on the couch reading, I heard this odd noise.
The Shelties jumped up, growling, but even they didn't know what it was yet.  Quickly, I locked them in the bedroom, grabbed my camera, and looked into the back yard. There was a magnificent Tom, clucking and displaying.  How convenient is that?
But, he was definitely a "man on a mission".  He didn't stay in the yard at all, but strutted through with a purpose, down into our far meadow.  I followed him at a distance to discover his agenda.
And then, I saw where he was headed!
Unbelievably, there was a SECOND Tom! I guess they were having a "display contest!"  Both of them clucking, and spreading their tails. What a cool sight!  I guess you have to be a hen to have a clue who was winning.
We've lived in this house almost 5 yrs. and this is the first time I've seen this.  Makes me wonder what other cool stuff is in store for us!  :)

Transferring the Chicks

There's never an end to the chores around here, and unfortunately for Bruce, the majority of them fall upon his shoulders.  (We're all just lucky he has strong, wide shoulders).
The chore today was to build a pen inside the existing chicken coop, so we could transfer the chicks from our garage, into the hen house where they belong.
They are growing too big for the tiny enclosure we had them in, PLUS, this will give the hens and roosters a chance to get used to the babies, without them being able to get AT the babies.
Journey was all for the idea. She likes to help :)
The roosters, and hens knew something was up... they just weren't sure they were going to like it-
whatever IT was.
Bruce did a GREAT job dividing the coop....
there was only one thing...
Luckily, he remedied the problem before we put the chicks in!  Oopsies!  :)
Done!  Time to get the babies!
Selkie and Piper waited patiently.
They like helping with other chores better.
The chicks were a bit worried,
especially when Journey came to check them out.
Once in their new home, they settled right in.
Olivia is the rust colored chick. Ebony is the large black one, and just to Ebony's right, is Piccadilly! (she's Chelsey's favorite)
Henny Penny had been in the coop during the majority of the construction work,
but
Bess took it upon herself to call to the other hens
to come see the new additions.
They came in cautiously, one by one...
Apparently, they didn't feel threatened by the penned up youngsters. They accepted them readily enough.
All were in the coop, save one.
Henrietta.
We'd noticed she wasn't doing well, and we knew she wasn't going to make it.
Our hens are old, and though they've had wonderful, happy chicken lives, they are not going to live forever.
I stood with Henrietta for a bit, thanking her for her years of supplying us with fresh eggs- telling her what a beautiful, good chicken she was-
and in the quiet I became aware of her world.
the droning of a fly,
the chomping of a grazing horse,
the shuffling noises of her chicken friends scratching for food,
their murmured clucks, and calls,
distant bird songs,
crickets chirping,
the susurrus of animals.
And I thought, if she has to die, this isn't such a bad way to do it.
Amidst the familiar, and safe-
surrounded by all she knows.
Peaceful and calm.
I bade Journey to keep watch, and when I came down the next day, Henrietta had left us.
Everything that has life is precious to me.
Everything that breathes is important.
Thank you, Henrietta.
Godspeed

Trip to Missoula

We went to Missoula on Friday, and I bought the World's cutest riding boots EVER!
I, almost, NEVER buy myself anything the least bit expensive-
but I really DID need riding boots.
Complete with a heel! so my little preschool riding buddy won't yell at me anymore!

End of May

It's the end of May, and the baby bluebirds have hatched. Mother and Father are diligent in their care of the hatchlings, but we fear for their lives, since Hobbes has discovered the nesting box.
We have a two yr. old immature Bald Eagle that is hanging around. Bruce read that it takes Bald Eagles 4-5 yrs. to gain the plummage we associate with our Nation's bird.
This one has started getting a yellow beak, and white on his stomach and wings- a sure sign that he's a 2 yr. old.
Ferns are popping out all over, and
grass is green and thick.
We have several lovely Whitetail bucks around, as well as Mule deer.
They haven't quite "slicked off" yet, so they look at bit raggy.
I always want to just go up to them with a brush. :)
The Hummers are back
and the wildflowers are beginning to bloom
along with the flowering trees
Spring is beautiful in Montana!
and so very welcome ;)
